Worksheet and answer key

Write words in morse, read them back and crack a secret message.

  1. Pick the file for your paper: US Letter in the US and Canada, A4 almost everywhere else.
  2. Pick color, or ink-saver to print black on white with no fills.
  3. Print at 100% ("actual size"). Every sheet has margins of 0.6 inches (15 mm), so home printers don't crop it.

The Print this chart button prints only the letters and numbers from this page, in black.

Drawn to real timing

Most charts type morse with a period and a hyphen, which makes a dah look barely longer than a dit. ITU-R M.1677-1 sets the timing: a dah lasts three dits, and the marks inside a letter are one dit apart. Every mark on this page and on the sheets is drawn to that ratio, so the chart shows the rhythm you hear.

The word PARIS, drawn to scale.

Questions

How do you read a morse code chart?

Find the character, then read its marks from left to right: a dot is a dit and a bar is a dah, three times as long. To decode, use the tree sheet instead. Start at the top and go left for each dit and right for each dah.

What do 7 dots mean in morse code?

No morse character is seven dits. The error signal in ITU-R M.1677-1 is eight dits in a row, so a long run of dits usually means the sender made a mistake and is starting the word again.

Should I print the A4 or the US Letter chart?

US Letter in the US and Canada, and A4 in most other countries. Both versions hold the same content, laid out for their paper.

Can I use the charts in a classroom?

Yes. Print, copy and share them as often as you like, in classrooms and clubs too. Please keep the morseuniverse.com line at the bottom of each sheet.
