Morse code bracelet generator

Type a word, name or date to get a bead pattern for a morse code bracelet or necklace. See which beads to buy and the order to string them, then print it at actual size.

The message is 158 mm long. With 6 plain beads it strings to 176 mm, for a 7 in bracelet.

Beads to buy

  • 12 dit beads 3 mm round
  • 12 dah tubes 9 mm long, 3 mm across
  • 5 spacers 1.5 mm, between letters
  • 2 word beads 3 mm bicone, between words
  • 6 plain beads 3 mm round, either side

Any colors work. Keep the dit and dah beads apart from the rest, so the message reads at a glance.

Stringing order

  1. Start with 3 plain beads.
  2. I: 2 dit beads, then a word bead.
  3. L: 1 dit bead, 1 dah tube, 2 dit beads, then a spacer.
  4. O: 3 dah tubes, then a spacer.
  5. V: 3 dit beads, 1 dah tube, then a spacer.
  6. E: 1 dit bead, then a word bead.
  7. Y: 1 dah tube, 1 dit bead, 2 dah tubes, then a spacer.
  8. O: 3 dah tubes, then a spacer.
  9. U: 2 dit beads, 1 dah tube.
  10. Finish with 3 plain beads.

How to use it

  1. Type a word, name or date. Letters A to Z and numbers 0 to 9 all have codes.
  2. Pick how each dah is made, the bead size and the finished length, from bracelet to necklace.
  3. Check the beads to buy, then string them in the order the steps give.
  4. Press Download SVG for the whole strand at actual size, or Print at actual size for the pattern, the bead list and the steps on paper.

Why a dah is three beads long

A dah (the long signal) lasts three times as long as a dit (the short one), the timing ITU-R M.1677-1 sets. So a dah here is a tube three times as long as a round bead, or three round beads in a row, and the pattern keeps the rhythm of the sound.

The gaps are shortened. On the air, marks inside a letter are 1 unit apart, letters 3 and words 7. Strung that way, I love you would need 279 mm of 3 mm beads, longer than a bracelet. Here the marks of a letter touch, a small spacer sits between letters and a different bead between words, which brings it to 158 mm.

Bracelet or necklace

The length menu runs from 6 inch bracelets to 24 inch necklaces. Plain beads either side center the message on the strand, and the bead list counts them. If the message is longer than the strand, the line under the pattern names the smaller bead it fits.

Questions

How do you make a morse code bracelet?

Type your message here and string the beads in the order the steps give: a round bead for each dit, a tube or three beads for each dah, a spacer between letters and a word bead between words. Plain beads either side fill the strand to its length.

How do you read a morse code bracelet?

Start where the plain beads end and read one letter at a time, from one spacer to the next. Short beads are dits and long ones are dahs; look each letter up on the morse code alphabet, or tap the pattern into the translator.

What is I love you on a morse code bracelet?

Three words, I, LOVE and YOU, with a word bead between each. In 3 mm beads the message is 158 mm long, which fits a 7 inch bracelet. Open I love you in the generator, or hear it on the I love you in morse code page.

How does a morse code bracelet work?

Every letter in morse is a short run of dits and dahs, and the bracelet swaps each one for a short or a long bead. Anyone who knows morse, or looks it up, can read the message; to everyone else it is a pattern.
