How I love you is put together

I is two dits. LOVE is L (a dit, a dah and two dits), O (three dahs), V (three dits and a dah) and E (a single dit). YOU is Y (a dah, a dit and two dahs), O again and U (two dits and a dah). That adds up to 24 marks, 12 of them dits.

At 10 words per minute (WPM), the speed the player starts at, the whole phrase takes about 11 seconds. The two gaps between the words, seven units of silence each, are what tell the listener where one word stops.

88: how radio operators say it

On the air, operators rarely spell out the words. The International Amateur Radio Union’s operating guide lists 88 among the most used abbreviations, meaning love and kisses, next to 73 for best regards. In morse, 88 is two figure eights of three dahs and two dits each: 10 marks instead of 24.

For a card, a bracelet or a tattoo

The picture above names each letter under its marks, so it works as a pattern to copy. Every mark keeps the ratio set by ITU-R M.1677-1: a dah three times as long as a dit, with one dit’s space between marks.
